1. Kate Winslet – Flawless! Her hair is exactly what Oscar hair should be.
2. Penelope Cruz - Her perfect bun and thick fringe bang were absolute perfection.
3. Sarah Jessica Parker - She looked spectacular as usual. That mane of hair is just so perfect and was a great example of appropriate fullness.
4. Tilda Swinton - Love the new blonde hair! She usually looks a little hard for my taste, but the new color takes that lizard look down a couple notches. Just shows how hair color can change your whole aura.

Here's a blurb from the Rocky Mountain News about three Shear Genius contestants who participated in the 303 Magazine Hair Show:

TRESS TROT: A slew of hairstylists from local salons teased and tamed tresses on models during the 303 Magazine Hair Show on Sunday at the Expo Event Center, 35th and Walnut streets. Stunning and shocking styles included mohawks, chignons, braids, buns, pompadours, updos, frizz and curls, with models accessorized with rhinestone eyelashes, hair extensions and - in some cases - freaky frocks.

The show featured style segments from Shear Genius 2 finalists, our own Charlie Price, Nicole Obert (even tinier in person) and Daniel Lewis (such a doll). Those three in the final four of the Bravo reality series were beat out by Dee Adames.

Price showed off his trademark glam waves - a throwback to the 1940s - with local lovely Holly Kylberg in his model lineup. Obert chose hot hunks with pompadours, slicked-down Yuppie 'dos and a gamine bob. It won't shock fans of the show that Lewis relied on his Texan background and penchant for big hair. In the finale, his models came out spraying hair spray.

The Princess Grace Foundation is dedicated to identifying and assisting emerging talent in theater, dance, and film by awarding grants in the form of scholarships, apprenticeships, and fellowships.

Shear Genius finalist Nicole Obert was one of three finalists (out of 200 entrants) in the Wella Trend Vision Award National Competition. Well, we just heard from Nicole and she WON!

On November 22-23 she will be representing the US in Lisbon, Portugal, competing for the world title of Young Trend Setter.

BSG sends hearty congratulations to Nicole and we're sending good vibes out for a world championship win as well!

NO: That is something we will never know, nor is it something i think about. I dont like to think about what might have been, and remain thankful for what was.

BSG Interview With Charlie Price

Charlie Price was the first runner-up on this season of Shear Genius. He's a lot of fun to talk with, mostly because he doesn't mince words. Here are a few he's shared with us.

BSG: You won 4 elimination challenges and 2 short cut challenges. Did you think you had the finale challenge in the bag?

CP: i had a feeling that there might be "charlie fatigue" by the finale- no matter what i did it might not be enough lol- i was very proud of what i did- the other two obviously didn't even finish their models- during the judging all of the things that were said about my work are the things i strive for-technical, shiny ,luxurious etc-and just for the record- i fulfilled the challenge plus did 2 updos- plus did double process colors on all four clients- that achievement speaks for itself in my book.

BSG: How hard was it to keep quiet about the results for so many months since filming the finale?

CP: it was very hard- such an important and exciting experience is hard to lock away-i also am not good at secrets

Don't think that the finale viewing party was all the cross-reality-show fun we had last week! Laura K and I paid a visit to Project Runway season 2 designer Emmett McCarthy's Nolita boutique EMc2 on Thursday. While we were chatting, in walks Gail Soifer with Glenn Mitchell and her hubby Nick! The ladies posed with for pics with Emmett, wearing a couple of his designs.

I haven't seen what they've bought yet, but Laura K and I each bought a pair of shoes. (I was eyeballing one of those great purses too - hey, girls will be girls!)

When Reality Worlds Collide

On Wednesday, Laura K and I went to New York to attend the Shear Genius finale viewing party, sponsored by Nexxus. Upon arrival at the Tribeca Grand Hotel, Laura K spotted Charlie, his sister Kelly, and Daniel in the lobby, and they were nice enough to pose for some photos.

Before the party, we met up with Project Runway's Malan Breton and model Amanda Fields to have dinner at Top Chef season one winner Harold Dieterle's restaurant, Perilla. On our way out the door, we ran into finalist Nicole, posing here with her friend, Matt who came up from Texas to cheer for her. She was tiny and completely adorable.

Dinner was fantastic, and I enjoyed meeting Ms. Fields for the first time. Here are our dinner companions posing on the red carpet at the party.

The party started at 8PM with flashbulbs, as photographers flooded the red carpet area with lights to capture the stylists. Jaclyn and Rene were also in attendance. They are both as utterly gorgeous in real life as they are on the show. More so, actually.

Other stylists in attendance were Glenn, Gail, and Daniel. The gals were just plain stunning in the flesh. Gaw-juss!

After the initial red carpet photography, the stylists were allowed to mingle with the guests and Bravo shot mini interview videos (which will pop up on BSG sometime later). Then came a surprise Short Cut challenge in which the three finalists cut the hair of women who were making a donation to Locks of Love, a charity that creates wigs for children suffering from long term medical hair loss.

Here we see Jaclyn Smith, Nexxus Editorial Director Roy Teeluck and President of Locks of Love Madonna Coffman during the judging.

At 10 PM we were ushered into the hotel's theatre to watch the finale broadcast. The stylists sat in the front row, with the rest of us in the seats behind them. Everyone cheered and clapped during the broadcast, and it was probably the most fun I had watching TV in a long time. However, it did feel pretty weird not to be taking notes. Fellow blogger in attendance David Dust expressed the same sentiment.

After the broadcast, Dee was presented with a giant check and there were more photos taken plus interviews. At that point, the guests took the opportunity to thank their hosts and leave the event, as did Malan, Amanda, David, Laura, and I. What a fun party it had been!

BSG Interview with Daniel Lewis

Daniel Lewis has an enthusiasm and lust for life that is just plain infectious, as evidenced by his answers to a couple of Blogging Shear Genius' questions....

BSG: How frustrating was it that you couldn't work on your Mom's hair in the Surprise challenge?

DL: It was not at all frustrating. I am so busy at the salon I am usually not the one doing it anyway and I knew she was in good hands with Charlie. Although the plane barely hit the ground in Dallas before she had a full head of foils.

BSG: Who was your favorite guest judge and why?

DL: My favorite guest judges were Alison Sweeney (I have grown up with her on Days of Our Lives) and Robert Hallowell. They both spent the most “get to know you” time with us after their challenges and both seemed truly honored to be there. Jose was pretty great too and I was not expecting that at all.

“Seeing Double”
Insider Tips for Getting the Winning Look

Nexxus® Salon Hair Care, makers of salon-proven and genius approved hair care products, is back as the stylists choice to win on the second season of BRAVO’s reality competition series, “Shear Genius.” Nexxus Editorial Director Roy Teeluck shows that with the right products and a few simple steps anyone can achieve genius, just-from-the-salon-style at home.

Recap of Show

Stakes were high at this week’s short cut challenge, with the winner guaranteed a spot in the finale. Jaclyn's own stylist Jose Eber joined the contestants to judge their ability to successfully consult with their clients and give them a style that represents their own character. The challenge grew more laborious midway through when each stylist realized that their clients each had an identical twin who also needed a unique cut. For highlighting her client’s personalities with unique colors and shapes for each twin, Nicole received immunity from elimination.

For the first time this season, that elimination challenge did not culminate in a hair show. The contestants had to style for a photo shoot by fashion photographer Michael Grecco, each of them conceptualizing and executing an avant-garde look inspired by one of the four seasons. The challenge demanded they be on set throughout the shoot, working with the hair as the photographer requested. Charlie was praised by the judges for his style's impeccable shape, and he won for the fourth time this season. No one was quite as thrilled with Dee or Daniel’s work, but it was Daniel’s misuse of product and failure to style hair with the camera in mind that lost him his seat in the final three.

This week’s “how to get the look” from Roy

Avant-garde hairstyles are great for photo shoots and the runway, but don’t always translate to everyday. For a more wearable look that’s still edgy, try a tousled approach with a few fun accessories.

Shampoo and condition with products that help to boost volume. Try Nexxus Nexxus Diametress Shampoo and Nexxus Sublime Volume Conditioner.
To hold and maintain curl, apply Nexxus Alluring Curls to wet hair. Wrap different sized sections of hair around Velcro rollers to create a unique texture.
Apply heat with a blow-dryer until hair is dry. Allow locks to cool and remove rollers.
Use a curling iron randomly all over head to add in a few defined curls.
Take various sized sections of hair and pin on top of head with bobbi pins. Don’t worry if your updo is not “perfect.” The beauty in this look actually comes from the quirky mistakes.
Go back through hair and pull out few tendrils for added softness and dimension.
Spray with a light hold hair spray, like Nexxus Comb Thru, to help maintain the structure of the style.
Insert a flirty accessory, like a fresh flower, and your look is complete.

Charlie - this was your fourth Elimination Challenge victory - can you go all the way? Can this man be stopped?!

You were determined to make your hair avant garde because you knew that would be an important factor in judging. Although it seemed like the judges might not have been happy, they soon changed their tune and gave you the kudos you deserved for your seasonal styling. Congratulations once again.

Daniel, from the first cut, it looked like you would be in the Final Three and go to the finale; it's quite surprising to see that you made it only to the penultimate episode.

The judges did not like your styling and they did not think it was avant garde enough, although we know you did what you thought worked best based on the instructions you were given before the shoot.

You are a gentleman with true charm and a passion for what you do and we are sorry to see you go.

Calling LOL Donors!

Seeking women between the ages of 18-40 willing to donate their hair (10 inches or more) and participate in a live haircutting challenge as part of the Nexxus finale event for BRAVO’s hit reality show “Shear Genius”. Candidates should be available on the evening of Wednesday, August 27, live in the NY area and be willing to appear on camera. Hair will be cut and styled by “Shear Genius” finalists."

Interview with Paulo Candido

Paulo Candido took some time to answer a few questions for us here at Blogging Shear Genius....

BSG: Who was your favorite stylists on the show? Do you stay in touch with anyone?

PC: On the show I got really close to Nicole, even though I pretty much got along with everyone. My plan was to stay as neutral as possible and not get caught up in all the bullshit drama. After the show, I have gotten really close to Glenn, Nekisa, Meredith, Daniel, and Matt. Everyone on the show was pretty cool, yes even Charlie!

BSG: Name three people who were most influential in your career.

PC: The 3 people that have really influenced me throughout my career are Irvine and Louise Rusk, inventors of the cutting methods I have used now for 18 years and Tatjanna Czypionka who is the Technical Director for Rusk.

My First Perm

About twenty years ago I was a young mom in a neighborhood of young moms and one of my friends, Nancy, had beautiful long shiny thick dark brown hair. I had long brown hair too, but mine was rather ordinary.

One day I arrived at her door with my kids in tow for a play date and Nancy's hair looked more gorgeous than usual. She told me that she had gotten a "Spiral Perm" from "Lori" at the neighborhood salon.

I had never in my life had a perm, or color or any sort of treatment on my hair. I had virgin hair. But I wanted it to look like Nancy's so I made the appointment with Lori.

Cue music of doom.

The first thing I learned was that even though the salon rate for a perm was $45 - for me (because of the length) - I would pay not double... but TRIPLE the stated price. That was a lot of money but I wanted that luxurious curly sexy hair....

So I agreed and Lori began to set my hair in those plastic perm rollers. It took a LOT of rollers. She was borrowing them from other stylists. When she finished rolling everything, my head was gigantic and the rollers were heavy. She squirted on more of the smelly solution and put a plastic cap over the whole thing, but it wouldn't fit over all of the rollers. I'll pause while you try to imagine this. Some of them stuck out around the edges of the cap.

Then she put me underneath a lamp or a heater or something (can't exactly remember) and I waited...expecting a miracle.

After some time, she came over to "check on me" and when she went to unroll one of the curlers, it came off in her hand. WITH THE HAIR still in it....This happened to be right in the front of my forehead a little off-center.

I'm thinking "this probably isn't supposed to happen."

She removed the cap and squirted on something called "neutralizer" while calling on her fellow stylists to assist...very casually, as if perhaps she is overbooked and just trying to finish more quickly. They turn me away from the mirror and there are about four stylists, squirting and unrolling the curlers telling me to "close my eyes" because the solution might sting. Someone asked my to hold a towel over my face.... Very sneaky...

But this did not prevent me from seeing several of the rollers full of hair - broken off at the roots - in the basket with the rest.

So, Lori is still trying to behave as if nothing is wrong and I am still expecting to see these gorgeous long spiral curls.

She fluffs and dries and puffs and styles and you know, my hair was thick enough that the missing hanks of hair were not obvious... at first. She was very clever with the styling.

I went home with lovely long curls. No apologies. No one admitting that anything had gone wrong.

I was young and shy and I had no real salon experience. As a girl, my mom usually trimmed my hair I was completely intimidated. I never said a word.

Of course as my hair grew out it was obvious that something was wrong. I had about a two-inch wide section of hair over my left eye that sort of looked like a child's scissor experiment. It took about a year for it to grow out long enough to tuck behind my ear. I also had a cowlick that popped up if I parted my hair a certain way. Every once in a while I will see a photo of myself from that time and see the stupid reminder of my vanity.

It was a very long time before I went to a hair salon again.

BSG Interview with Nekisa

The lovely Nekisa answered a few questions for BSG. A couple of them might just surprise you.

BSG: How did you feel being in the bottom 2 or 3 so often during the competition? Was it discouraging?

NB: I was shocked to be in the bottom because it's an unfamiliar place for me. I do realize that the show was just a "game" and not based on real salon scenarios. Even so, looking back I would have liked to have been more relaxed and allow my talents to shine through.

BSG: Did Charlie pick on you as much as the editing made it seem?

NB: Charlie and I wanted to make it on the "Soup". I LOVE Joel McHale! But as far as Charlie and his comments about my anatomy go, his breasts are just as big as mine!

“American Idol” stylist Dean Banowetz joined the five remaining contestants for this week’s short cut challenge. Among the likes of Ryan Seacrest and Sanjaya, he also styles his 75 nieces and nephews—which helped him judge how well the stylists performed with their first grade clientele. They each had thirty minutes to cut and style the hair of a very particular and adorable six-year-old. Banowetz approved of most everyone but was a little concerned with Paulo’s unstable curls and Dee’s sloppy bangs. Daniel won for giving his client exactly what she wanted, a youthful version of Jaclyn’s long, brown curls.

At the elimination, the stylists were delighted to be joined by their family members acting as clients. Daniel’s earlier win gave him the advantage of matching up the group’s mothers, sisters and cousins with the stylists to give each woman a new look. The stylists tried hard to focus on their clients while keeping an eye on what was happening to their loved ones’ hair. Dee, Charlie and Daniel made up the top three, and Charlie was announced the winner for giving Daniel’s mom a short, blonde Sharon Stone look. Nicole and Paulo were the judges’ least favorite, and Paulo was sent home. The judges felt they’d seen this choppy cut from him one too many times, and since it really didn’t work with his client’s hair texture, his time was up.

This week’s “how to get the look” from Roy

Don’t get stuck in a mom-hair rut! Sometimes a bit of color and a new shape can make a big difference.

Shampoo and condition with products that will protect color, while enhancing and maintaining shine. Try Nexxus Color Assure Shampoo and Nexxus Color Ensure Conditioner.
To add body, apply a volumizing styler, like Nexxus Root Exxtend, directly to the roots to create lift.
Use a blow-dryer and small barrel round brush to dry hair completely and create a shape that frames the face.
To emphasize texture, apply Nexxus VersaStyler all over your locks, and finger through to separate and mold the look.
Finish by spraying entire head with a lightweight hairspray, like Nexxus 360° Volume.

It's Wednesday again and time for yet another exciting episode of Shear Genius! :::cue suspenseful music::: There are only five stylists left, and only three can be part of the final um...three. For some reason, that makes me sad. Ok - it's because I've become attached to folks. [sigh]

Recap of Show

During this week’s shortcut challenge, contestants weren’t allowed to use their much-loved hairspray or any conventional product when styling their clients’ hair. “Kitchen beautician” Robert Hallowell joined them with a table full of food and other organics that they had to use instead. Stylists applied molasses, salt, eggs, peanut butter and mustard to sculpt and style some extreme looks, and Robert rewarded Paulo for making the best use of the unconventional products. Nicole was his least favorite for lacking any confidence in her shapeless ‘do.

The contestants then met up with a group of canine clients in the park, where they found out that dog grooming was the task of the day. They had to style their new four-legged friends and give each dog’s owner a coordinating look. Daniel and Dee scored highest, with Dee’s perfect match between dog and owner leaving no question about her style’s inspiration. Charlie, Nekisa and Paulo didn’t fare as well. Charlie was scolded for not taking an interest in the challenge, but it was Nekisa who got the boot after hovering near the bottom for several weeks. No one saw a connection between the dog and its owner.

This week’s “how to get the look” from Roy

A dog is a woman’s best friend! For a pooch inspired look that pops, don’t try for a literal take on your doggie’s duds. Instead, take one key feature and play on that.

Shampoo and condition with strengthening products that will provide extra nutrients and sheen. Try Nexxus Botanoil Shampoo and Nexxus KERApHIX Conditioner.
For added texture on fine hair, apply Nexxus VersaStyler all over locks. Use a blow-dryer and large round brush to dry hair completely.
Apply a sculpting gel, like Nexxus Exxtra Gel, to the top-back section of hair to add spiky texture and definition.
Finish look by spraying entire head with a strong-hold hairspray, like Nexxus Maxximum.

BSG Interview with Glenn Mitchell

The lovely and talented Glenn Mitchell took some time to answer a few questions posed to her by BSG.

BSG: What a shock! Do you think you deserved to be cut in this challenge?

GM: Well I assume you have seen my exit interview by now, but just in case... No, I didn't feel like I should have been cut from the competition. During the judging process, they seemed to like my work more then others work on that particular day. I also felt like if the group as a whole didn't perform well, then maybe the restrictions placed on us were a bit too unrealistic. It takes me back to college, where if an entire class failed a test then the professor realized the format of the test was not what it should be and we usually got a "mulligan" or the test was just dumped all together. So if the is no winner how can there be a real loser?
